Coraline - book cover assignment
Media: Digital Illustration
Class: Computer Illustration
Assignment instructions: To create a cover illustration for our favorite book.
This was the first assignment within the computer illustration class and it’s purpose was not only to see how we handled the program but also to learn our way around the tools within the program known as Corel - Painter X.
I definitely enjoyed creating this piece. As an artist it is difficult at times to have a consistent idea from the get go, having the objective of creating an illustration for an idea I knew well enough served as a form of guide. There were moments of frustration, mainly with my technique, it was difficult to maintain a balance between the whimsical side of the piece and the side that is to have a slight realism to it.
Something that works well for the piece would be the color scheme, it does include versions of the primary colors but the scheme is dark enough to simulate not just night time but also the sinister mood of what is happening. Overall the illustration needs work on it’s edges, to create more hard edges and therefore balance and accuracy.

Catching Opportunities
This assignment was for my computer illustration class. Each student picked a fortune cookie and was in turn to illustrate the fortune within it. My fortune was "opportunities are all around you".
I decided to represent the opportunities as lightning bugs or fire flies, giving a whimsical and magical air to the concept and also symbolizing how when we are younger we are not afraid of chasing after the fireflies, dreams or opportunities.

Breaking the piñata
The goal of this assignment was to illustrate childhood memories.
Some of the memories I'm most fond of, are the happy moments that came during my birthday.
I loved the excitement of the moment when the piñata would brake open and all the candy and surprises within it would go flying to the spectators.
I wanted to portray that moment from an angle that is usually unapproachable at the breaking of a piñata, so I decided to leave my comfort zone and try a different angle for this composition.

Advanced Illustrator Calendar - Month of March
The purpose of this assignment was to construct a themed calendar utilizing the different techniques and effects learned through out the Advanced Illustrator class. I decided to give my calendar an Ocean theme based on the first technique we had learned during class, which was to be used for the first month of the calendar.
The scene for the month of March is that of sea stars laying on the send. The reason I chose the star fish for this technique was that the sea stars characterize themselves for their texture and colors, characteristics I felt would be perfectly captured with the repetitive pattern technique.
I am extremely pleased with the results I was able to achieve by adapting each technique to each ocean scene and creature represented in each month of my calendar.
Cartoon - Self Portrait
Media: Digital Illustration - (Photoshop)
Class: Cartooning
The objective of this assignment was to create an accurate self portrait and include one of our past pets to serve as a setting or story for the cartoon.
The assignment was to teach us to exaggerate facial features that are already prominent so that we can learn train the observation skills that are needed to make a cartoon.
It was extremely fun to create this piece, I am a very expressive person and my facial expressions portray emotion extremely well, that along with a fun pet story helped me create a piece that I felt excited and confident to make.
I feel the overall concept for this piece works out quite well, but after revisiting it, I notice that perhaps the colors can be worked with some more to create more excitement and contrast.
